The objective of this paper is to examine the determinants of Banks' capital structure in contemporary markets. Our special care on these factors is justified from the cumulative impairment losses of banks' loan portfolios, the observed limitation of bank deposits and the extensive need for financing from the European Central Banks' capital. Our main consideration in this paper is actually to show how the autonomy index "equity to total assets" defines the European and United Kingdom banks' capital structure during the period 1996-2010. According to the findings from recent relative papers, the implementation of the Basel II regulatory framework, is defined by the minimum limits of capital reservation imposed (as it is expressed through Tier I ratio), and has an immediate impact on the banks' capital structure. It has been documented that banks' capital structure can be considered as stable due to the cumulative capitalization of the previous year's equity. What we have analyzed here is the quality of equity, the capital adequacy and the cost of market financing.
