A multimedia approach to the dissemination, communication, and exploitation of Cultural Heritage (CH) is a well-established trend worldwide. Several studies show that the use of new and combined media improves the way culture is experienced. The benefit concerns both the number of people who can access the knowledge and the quality of the dissemination of the knowledge itself. In this regard, CH uses Augmented, Virtual, and Mixed Reality technologies for different purposes, such as education, exhibition improvement, exploration, reconstruction, and virtual museums. Some research has been done on these emerging technologies. However, either they are not industry specific, or they do not have a holistic perspective in that they do not cover all aspects of technology. Therefore, a review of these technologies in terms of cultural heritage is required. Respectively, this thesis investigates the state-of-the-art system of Augmented, Virtual, and Mixed Reality in its entirety and in terms of cultural heritage. In addition, specific areas of application in digital cultural heritage are identified and suggestions are made as to which technology is most appropriate in each case. Finally, the thesis envisages future research directions for Augmented and Virtual Reality, with special emphasis on interaction interfaces and explores the implications in the field of cultural heritage.
