Nowadays, the use of the sea as one of the major means for hosting several human activities has expanded rapidly, playing a very important role to World economy. At the same time, the achievements of technology in the field of information technology and communication networks lead to rapid developments in every aspect of human life, which results to the creation of new, ever-increasing communication needs. Moreover, these achievements could also allow the further improvement of the applications and systems that are used today in shipping. However, there are steps that need to be done towards this direction since the matching of the possibilities offered by the technology with the requirements of the applications used in shipping has not yet been accomplished. In the past few years, there has been intense activity in the scientific community aiming to the development of networks that will bridge the gap regarding the quality and speed of communication between land and sea. The object of this master thesis is the detailed recording of network and communication technologies that are being used now or will be implemented in marine environments in the near future.
