This paper deals with how family businesses (small and medium-sized) could gain a strong competitive advantage and be able to excel over other family businesses, which are basically competing. The aim is therefore to identify innovative practices for these companies in order to gain this advantage. Therefore, effective ways must be studied and found for small and medium-sized enterprises, so that they can survive and excel over the rest.
As an initial part of the work, it would be useful to clarify some concepts, such as what management is, what strategy is and what it consists of. Later, before capturing the concepts of family, family business, what they consist of, but also the contribution of innovation to gaining a competitive advantage, an analysis of the business environment (internal and external) will be performed first. It will also mention the current economic situation and whether small and medium enterprises are, even today, an integral part of the Greek economy.
Closing the work, it will be noted the reason why it is necessary for companies, especially today, to constantly create value in the consumer, in order to gain and maintain a competitive advantage, but also how this must be applied in order to be able to retain customers but also to acquire more and more in order to survive in space.
The object of study will be a family business, a confectionery workshop, which operates in this branch of sweets for more than 20 years and is based in Attica. The purpose is to first analyze the current situation of the company, in order to identify those practices that will make it gain a sustainable competitive advantage and excel over its competitors.
