This thesis focuses on the development of an online database system. This system can be applied to the management and administration of a hypothetical laboratory. As it is known, a laboratory, either biological or toxicological or mechanical, is composed not only of human resources but also of equipment. As laboratory equipment, is defined any product is used for the operation of the laboratory outside of the human resources and the building facilities. The equipment can be separated based on several criteria such as location, suppliers, users etc.
The efficient inventory management of the laboratory equipment is an important tool for the management and coordination of the laboratory. Initially, during the design of a new laboratory, a number of equipment orders may exist and inventory management of equipment may be needed not only to avoid double orders and excessive inventory, but also to better control the total cost accordingly to the budget. In the next stage, during the operation of the laboratory, the management of the equipment inventory can also be a useful tool for maintenance. Almost every product or electronic device or electronic tool has a guarantee date and a possible renewal date. In order to better control the corresponding dates, the inventory management tool could be helpful.
However the inventory management tool should be a modern data management system. The users of the system, either familiar with databases or not, should be able to easily study the equipment of the laboratory, to add or to remove new elements, to monitor dates and to administer the lab equipment. The application that will be implemented should be a web application in order to be easily accessible from different locations and by the different users. Finally, the application should be both user-friendly and usable, which means that users are able to easily find and process the information required.
