Special effort has been given in reviewing web tourist guides and the role they play in the marketing of tourist destinations. Three of the most important greek internet-based tourist guides are reviewed.
To better understand the technology and mechanisms that build-up a web tourist guide, a prototype guide has been designed and implemented. The focus is given in offering an expandable information framework as well as a - virtually unlimited - support of user interface and information languages. To better design the guide, current implementations have been studied and a simple yet information rich environment has been developed, organizing information is easy to find hierarchy. The guide implements a 3-tier architecture making it simple to make adjustments to information and presentation.
Finally, criticizing the functionalities of the prototype tourist guide a number of suggestions for future development has been made, including Web 2.0 extensions like blogging, user opinions and social networking.
