MoodleAbstract
The present msc thesis discusses the study and evaluation of an e-learning user modeling
platform for students, concerning the support of computer programming lessons for young
students of ages 10 to 11 years old. Computer programming lessons for students of the fifth
grade of primary schools in Greece that comply with the United Reformed Educational Program
(U.R.E.P), usually include the gradual and slow-paced contact of the students with the initial and
basic concerns of programming and programming languages. This is achieved with the
occupation of the students with special programming environments created for young students
(8-16) like the application Scratch which has been created by the famous MIT University of the
USA. This environment is one of the most popular environments in use by computer science
teachers for such activities in primary schools and for students of the appropriate age. The
study of this msc thesis includes a web based e-learning system created with Moodle platform,
the creation of individual student-users that use the system, and the presentation-executionreport
of three courses created in special SCORM packages form (theory-examples-test), able
to work through the Moodle site-platform. During the presentation-execution of the courses by
the student-users of the system, the results of the student’s answers are being reported in his
account-user model, for further consideration and evaluation by his teacher. Finally there exists
a comparison and evaluation of the reports of the lessons which took place thoroughly in the
classroom, with the lessons that took place combining classroom lessons and e-learning
lessons. The conclusions of the study are of high interest and compose basis for future
continuation of this study.
