In recent decades the matters of reproduction of the population and especially the ones pertaining to fertility constitute a main subject of debate around the demographic phenomena in Greece because of the decline of the birthrate/fertility and the demographic ageing. Main scope of this dissertation is to examine the relationships between socioeconomic and demographic factors that affect fertility in Greece through the use of micro data of the Population Census of 1991 and 2001(IPUMS project: Integrated Public Use Micro data Series). Moreover, an attempt is made through the use of models of logistic regression to quantify the impact of specific factors such as age of the women, educational attainment, employment status, and nationality on the numbers of children ever born of the women in Greece for 1991 and 2001. From the study of those models we can observe that in all three cases, the odds of a woman to give birth to more than one children (two, three, etc.) decreases as level of educational attainment increases. In other words the higher the educational level she has achieved the fewer children she will have. The effects of nationality differentiate from model to model. In addition, employment status plays a significant role in the decision of a woman to become a mother; obviously an unemployed woman will not decide so easily to have children compared to a woman who is in paid employment. In the dissertation all the above-mentioned conclusions are presented analytically.
