Natural Disasters have arisen the concern of public opinion globally. Disastrous floods, deadly earthquakes, landslides and other natural phenomena overwhelm human capacity and constitute serious changes in earth. Disastrous events cause not only casualties but also have an adverse psychosocial impact on individuals, society and environment. Specifically there has been a tremendous rise in natural disasters. Natural Disasters are an indispensable part of the Greek territory. The heat wave of 1987, the earthquake of 1999, the fires are only some of the cases that prove this rise. This is why the role of civil protection in disaster risk management is so important. This present paper focuses on policies that are being implemented by civil protection authorities in disaster risk management and on analyzing the phases of disaster risk management. This paper also includes appropriate ways of coping with disastrous risks that are adopted by several countries. Finally the earthquake risk management phases are being analyzed.
