In the contemporary organizational environment, effective crisis management constitutes a critical factor for the sustainability and resilience of businesses. The present study focuses on the Greek tourism sector, which is characterized by increased exposure to crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and economic fluctuations. Employees’ ability to respond effectively under conditions of uncertainty and pressure is closely associated with the concept of self-efficacy, while leadership plays a decisive role in shaping the relevant beliefs and behaviors. This dissertation examines the relationship between transformational leadership and employees’ self-efficacy in crisis management.
The theoretical framework of the study is based on the theory of transformational leadership (Burns, 1978; Bass, 1985) and Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy (1977, 1997), as well as on the contemporary literature concerning crisis communication and crisis management. The empirical research was conducted using a structured questionnaire administered to a sample of 100 private-sector employees. The data were analyzed using the JASP statistical software and included reliability tests, descriptive statistics, and correlation analyses.
The results revealed a weak, positive, but statistically non-significant relationship between transformational leadership and overall self-efficacy in crisis management, while variations were observed across specific dimensions of self-efficacy. The findings suggest that transformational leadership may selectively influence particular aspects of perceived capability to act; however, it does not appear to constitute a determining factor in the overall level of self-efficacy.
The present study contributes to the literature on organizational behavior and crisis management, particularly within the context of the Greek tourism sector, by highlighting the role of leadership in shaping employees’ perceived ability to cope with crisis situations and by providing empirical evidence for understanding the psychological mechanisms that influence organizational preparedness and effective crisis management.
