The present master’s thesis addresses the design and development of a digital course titled “Teaching Mathematics in Early Childhood”. The primary motivation for conducting this study was the identified need for specialized professional development for preschool teachers that effectively links modern pedagogical approaches, such as the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, with daily school practice.
The purpose of this thesis is to create a comprehensive framework for professional empowerment, offering educators practical tools for cultivating mathematical thinking. The digital course is hosted on the Google Classroom platform and follows the micro-learning strategy.
Upon its completion, trainees are expected to be able to design targeted play-based activities, recognize opportunities for mathematical exploration in everyday situations, and shape a supportive learning environment that promotes children's autonomy. To achieve these learning outcomes as well as active participation, modern digital tools such as H5P objects, along with collaboration and reflection tools, were utilized.
Finally, the proposed course highlights the power of digital training as a means of substantial professional development, bridging the gap between theory and practice for the benefit of children's mathematics education.
