This postgraduate dissertation explores the importance of art and cultural heritage as pedagogical tools in secondary education, with a particular focus on adolescence, a period marked by heightened emotional, social, and cognitive needs. It examines the contribution of arts-based learning—learning through and with art—to the holistic development of students: cognitively, emotionally, socially, and culturally. Drawing on relevant literature and mapping cultural and educational institutions in Greece and abroad (including museums, foundations, and digital platforms), the dissertation highlights the wide range of available resources that support the creative and cross-curricular integration of the arts into teaching practice. In its applied section, the dissertation presents an educational scenario that incorporates art and intangible cultural heritage into foreign language teaching. The proposed approach is grounded in UNESCO’s Six Step Model for educational scenario development, Bloom’s Taxonomy, and the principles of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). The findings emphasize that art is not a peripheral or supplementary element in education, but a core medium for cultivating imagination, empathy, and critical thinking. Ultimately, it contributes meaningfully to shaping creative, active, and socially engaged citizens.
