The evolution and intensification of the use of new technologies during the last decade, as well as the necessity of physical file digitalization and process automation, which emerged due to the rapid developments in public health with covid-19, brought the legal sector, as it was traditionally organized in an «uncomfortable» situation. Despite the increasing actions and initiatives towards "digital legal literacy", and also the emergence of new scientific fields & terminology combining legal science with new technologies, such as "legal tech", "law tech", "regtech", as well as the continuous application of artificial intelligence systems in the judicial system, until the onset of the pandemic the majority of legal practitioners were in a state of denial regarding the modernization and technological “uplift” of their daily tasks.
With the existence of "legal technology" already transforming the legal industry, the author, having legal studies as a
scientific background and having worked in the legal profession in Greece, aims (in the context also of the practical knowledge on the use of new technologies acquired in this master in digital culture in all of its forms and aspects) to research and showcase in an interdisciplinary way a modern “trend” that is emerging and concerns the application of the design scientific methodology
(mainly information design) and can be a useful tool for the effective communication and dissemination of “difficult” legal information in an comprehensible form for the final recipient (non legal scientist – non expert in understanding legislation).
The concept of "legal design", as it has been clearly captured by the pioneer in this specific research field Margaret Hagan, consists in the application of human-centered design in the world of law in order to make legal systems and the services more human-centered, useful and satisfying during the experience of "navigating" in them. In this thesis we ask the following questions:
● What are the particularities of legal information and the difficulties in communicating it effectively?
● What are the difficulties for the implementation of legal design due to the way the legal profession is being practiced in Greece?
● We are in a period characterized by “Information & Reading fatigue” – The tiny terms, the endlessly long texts, the naming of provisions and all new legislative texts cannot be mentally absorbed even by the best lawyers. What is it after all that compels legal professionals to create such long texts and what is the necessity when drafting a legal provision and becomes finally so
illegible and incomprehensible?
● What are the basic principles of the scientific field of design that can contribute to the more effective communication of legal information?
