The modern competitive environment and the era of technological revolution we are living through forces businesses and industries into digitalising their practices and operational methods aiming to a continuous process optimisation. Basically, the need for high-quality, safe but low-manufacturing cost products is the result of business management strategies, perfectly aligned with today’s reality. Nonetheless, as Peter Drucker very aptly remarks “It is impossible to manage something you cannot control and you cannot control something you cannot measure”. Therefore, control and performance management require metrics which will quantify the company’s performance while, simultaneously, serve as the basis for goal setting and improvement.
In this light, a vital tool for assessing and optimising the industry services operation is the Key Performance Indicators – KPIs. KPIs function as measurable indicators that capture the crucial aspects of production, from equipment efficiency to product quality and production cost. The systematic analysis of these indicators allows for identifying deviations, making informed decisions and implementing corrective actions. Thus, the optimisation using KPIs is not just related to productivity increase, but also to quality and safety assurance; elements that constitute core values of industrial businesses.
The present thesis displays a case study regarding the assessment of key production performance indicators through the analysis of data in real industrial environment. More specifically, the current situation in the packaging department has been recorded (where the survey has been conducted) and then, with the contribution of the head of the department and access to actual production data, the most suitable indicators possible have been calculated. Another equally important part of the thesis is the assessment of the calculated KPIs with the aim of identifying the causes of deviation from the set goals and the suggested corrective actions implemented in the specific packaging department. The entire procedure aimed at improving the performance and quality of the department’s processes and operations.
In particular, performance indicators, like production rates, show a tendency of fulfilling and exceeding the business goals but it is considered necessary for the precise limits to be revaluated in relation to the actual machine performance since an issue of abnormal operation occurs (above or below the limits). Furthermore, the results indicate that the production process is marked by high reliability in terms of quality yet by significant potential for improvement regarding the stability of availability and performance effectiveness. Lastly, the main focus with respect to the decline in the downtime indicator should be on the enhancement of preventive maintenance, the decrease in mechanical failures and the optimisation of time management, thus increasing the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
Consequently, the KPIs analysis does not constitute a mere control method but rather a strategic process that enhances decision making contributing to the development of a competitive advantage for the company and, therefore, maintaining sustainability and increasing profitability.
