The rapid diffusion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the workplace by reshaping roles, workflows, and decision-making processes, while simultaneously revealing new sources of stress and psychological strain. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the use of AI in the workplace and employees’ psychological well-being (stress, insecurity, and fatigue), as well as the moderating role of technology readiness in this relationship. A quantitative research design was adopted through an online questionnaire administered to employees in the Greek private sector, employing three reliable scales to measure AI usage, perceptions, and stress. Statistical analyses included correlation tests and multiple regression models. The results indicate that the mere frequency of AI use does not necessarily lead to increased stress; rather, the key factor is how employees perceive and experience technological change. Education and familiarity with AI tools appear to mitigate psychological strain and enhance self-confidence. Overall, stress does not stem from the technology itself but from the perceptions and organizational context within which it is implemented. Therefore, targeted training, human oversight, algorithmic transparency, and the cultivation of psychological safety emerge as crucial conditions for AI to function as a “resource” rather than a “demand” that fuels technostress.
