This thesis refers to the design and development of a Digital Course that aims to educate seniors in internet security, prevent possible forms of fraud and reduce the digital divide. Initially, reference is made to the purpose served by the diploma and the need for education
that should be provided to seniors is documented accordingly. The digital course will focus on four basic micro-courses with the aim to provide a more effective education to an unquestionably vulnerable age group in our society.
In the four basic micro-courses we will emphasize:
The digital divide and how to deal with it.
The internet and how its use affects their daily lives.
The recognition of risks that lurk when browsing the internet.
How to perceive and protect their personal data.
How to recognize the various forms of fraud on the internet, as well as ways to protect themselves, perform transactions safely and create secure passwords for their online accounts.
Due to the physical changes that affect the cognitive ability of seniors, education should be adapted based on their needs (“age-centered approach”), in order to prevent their victimization in cyberspace. They should develop abilities - skills that will give them the tools to bridge the digital gap that exists between them and technology.
Reference is made to the advantages and challenges of creating digital courses with the “target group” of seniors and it is once again proven that digital courses are a teaching method that has come as a compass towards future knowledge.
For the implementation of the digital course, we consider the choice of the Moodle platform appropriate, since it gives us the opportunity to use a multitude of digital media and tools, both for understanding concepts and practicing skills.
This specific thesis demonstrates the indisputable need for education of the elderly, especially in Greece, as the digital literacy of this age group is lagging behind. The digital empowerment of the elderly will contribute to a better management of the internet in their daily lives, increasing their self-confidence and security when browsing the internet.
Any future update is welcome, as the creation of digital courses that focus on the elderly age group is still at an early stage.
