Supply chain or otherwise Logistics is the term that describes the transportation, storage and
general handling of products from the moment they are raw materials until the moment they
reach their final point for sale or consumption. Today's global reality requires the increasingly
effective configuration and operation of supply chain systems (logistics), so that it meets the
plethora of requirements that exist over time or arise again. The role of efficient operation of
the supply chain over the last 50 years has been decisive for the improvement and development
of the global economic reality for many businesses, a role, however, which had as its only
success factor that of profit without counting in the explosion of the new global reality the
negative aspects of the operations involved.
In recent years it has become increasingly clear that concerns about human environmental
well-being are growing. The integration of environmental and social criteria into supply chain
processes is of key importance and concerns both the business world and decision-makers for
the institutional promotion and protection of appropriate practices.
This thesis attempts to present the connection between logistics, environment and
sustainable development, analyze relevant case study and reach critical conclusions that are
consistent with them, but also some basic prospects for the future, as supply chain is a very
important part of the organization and prosperity of human societies, but also of balance (or
imbalance) between economic development, institutions, society and environment.
