Abstract
This study examines the transformative role of technology in shaping visitor experiences in technologically advanced tourist destinations. As digital innovations redefine the tourism sector, destination marketing organizations (DMOs) are adopting advanced strategies to remain competitive. At the same time, tourist destinations and their visitors are exploring the application and use of digital tools such as augmented and virtual reality, user-generated digital content, and the integration of online applications into the travel experience. Through these developments, the technological transformation of tourism gives new significance to the pre- and post-travel stages of a tourist experience, which now emerge as crucial for the overall attractiveness of a destination. As these stages gain increased attention, the purpose of this study was to explore the variables that contribute to the enhancement of pre- and post-travel factors, and consequently, to the further development of destinations and the improvement of the organizations that manage them. Specifically, we hypothesized that five variables related to the tourist destination and five variables related to visitors would have a positive impact on five types of pre- and post-travel factors. The hypotheses were tested using an online questionnaire completed by 156 Greek participants. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that digital media influence during the decision-making stage, the capabilities of digital media, and uniqueness are destination-related variables that positively affect pre- and post-travel factors. Similarly, the need for innovation, engagement, and a positive image emerged as key visitor-related variables for enhancing pre- and post-travel factors. The findings highlight the impact of new technologies on visitor satisfaction, their commitment to destinations, and the broader implications for sustainable tourism development. Finally, the results indicate opportunities for destination growth as well as the level of familiarity of Greek tourists with tourism-related technology.
