Food waste and loss constitute a critical and complex issue with significant economic, social, and environmental impacts, affecting every stage of the food supply chain, from production to consumption. Globally, food waste reaches an estimated cost of $1.7 trillion annually (FAO, 2011), while in the European Union, around 88 million tons of food are discarded each year, causing substantial environmental consequences.
Reducing food waste is not only an environmental concern but is also directly linked to food security, improving nutrition, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and conserving valuable resources such as water and land. Additionally, reducing food waste can enhance productivity, boost economic growth, and ensure fair returns for producers.
The aim of this thesis is to present the phenomenon of food waste, analyze its causes, and outline the goals for effectively addressing this issue.
