Abstract
This master thesis of the University of Piraeus’ MBA “Tourism Management” deals with the new trends that result for tourism, after the chronology and the definition of the phenomenon, its analysis as an industry, the apposition and the analysis of tourism industry’s major statistics, the analysis of industry’s environment, the apposition of coronavirus pandemic’s effect in tourism and the analysis of current literature, finally categorizing them into four major categories. In more detail, the first chapter examines the definitions of tourism, the historical evolution of tourism phenomenon from ancient times to date, its theoretical background and its analysis as an industry. In the second chapter, major statistics of the tourism industry are referred and analyzed, like the countries and the cities with most arrivals, the countries with the higher receipts from tourism, the countries whose inhabitants make the higher expenditures for tourism and the countries with the higher percentage and absolute tourism’s contribution to their GDP. In the third chapter, tourism industry’s external environment is analyzed as per social, economic, technological, natural, cultural, international, legal and political, administrative and institutional and infrastructure factors. The fourth chapter examines the effect of the restrictive measures in tourism industry, against the spread of covid19 and the opportunities that emerged during the same period. In the fifth chapter, these are the scientific paper that are analyzed: a) “Challenges and Trends of Digital Innovation in the Tourism Sector: Contemporary Literature Review” (Open Journal of Business and Management), b) “Keeping two balls in the air: The bleisure travel experience” (Annals of Tourism Research Empirical Insights), c) “Measuring sustainable tourism: a state of the art review of sustainable tourism indicators” (Journal of Sustainable Tourism), d) “Towards a better understanding of memorable wellness tourism experience” (International Journal of Spa and Wellness) and e) “A market segmentation study of solo travel intentions and constraints”(Journal of Hospitality & Tourism research). In the sixth chapter, new trends in tourism are listed and commented, categorized into: new traveler’s desires, new forms of tourism, new technologies and trends towards sustainable tourism development. In the final part of summary and conclusions, emphasis is given to the view of the corporations and
organizations that are active in the tourism industry. This work is a bibliographic research and overview, as well as a collection and analysis of data from certified international institutions and organizations, creating a useful manual of historical review and sectoral mapping of tourism for the general interest reader. Furthermore, the potential traveler can extract useful information about the new trends prevailing in tourism and organize his trip accordingly. Finally, businesses active in tourism have the opportunity to obtain various useful information and data regarding new trends in tourism.
