Literature review on the use of artificial intelligence tools in education

In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools have dominated all human activities, with a notable intensity in the field of education (Lim et al., 2023:1). Recent developments in AI have created high expectations for its future impact, both in teaching and learning (Holmes & Tuomi, 2022:1). AI tools have evolved rapidly and are already being applied in the educational process (Ali et al., 2023:1), providing educators with valuable insights into learner performance, learning outcomes and educational effectiveness (Owan et al., 2023:2). At the same time, learners benefit from using AI tools by extending their self-regulation skills and the efficiency of their self-study (Kim et al., 2022:6091). Furthermore, the deployment of AI tools by educational organizations can provide more personalized learning guidance, enhancing student-centered education (Hwang et al., 2020:1).
To this end, this Master Thesis examines the integration and application of AI tools in Education, through a structured literature review, which provides a view of the current research landscape with an emphasis on the categories of AI applications (intelligent teaching systems, intelligent agents, ChatGPT, ChatBots and automated assessment systems), as well as the use of its tools by teachers, learners and educational organizations, challenges and advantages.
