This dissertation under the title "Shipping and its contribution to the global and Greek economy: Legislative framework, Risks and Costs", examines the role of Shipping in the global and Greek economy, the legislative framework governing maritime transport, the risks and costs of threats, such as a terrorist attack, piracy, etc.
The first chapter gives the definition of Shipping and then there is a historical review of how the Shipping industry has evolved over time. Subsequently, a bibliographic investiga- tion is carried out to highlight the effects of the sector on the global and Greek economy and the various types of cargo and charter are analyzed. Next, is described the important contribu- tion of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to the Shipping industry.
The second chapter describes the maritime transport of goods, analyzing the intermodal transport and the contracting parties of the charter, the role of the contracting parties in the transport of bulk cargo and specifically in the transport of petroleum.
In the third chapter, through bibliographic study and research, the legislative framework is analyzed that governs maritime transport, the risks and the protection measures that can be applied to protect both the goods and the people involved, as well as, the costs from the existing risks.
Then, in the fourth chapter, a Case Study is presented to better understand the process of protecting a ship (its cargo and personnel), in the specific case of the AZBURG in the Black Sea, and then, in the fifth chapter, prevention proposals and reductions of risks in maritime transport are presented. Finally, some conclusions are drawn regarding the subject of this re- search.
