The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the relationship between economic development and the quality of democracy in both theoretical and research contexts. In this context, for the present study, initial data from the World Bank were used to measure per capita GDP of the world countries expressed in dollars of 2015 and in relation to the measurement of democracy, data from two different institutes were selected to deal with this issue. Growth, measured as the rate of change in per capita real GDP of the countries available for both the institutes and the World Bank (182 and 145 countries respectively for the Freedon in the World index and for the two Polity V indices) was not seen to be a predictor of the level of democracy in any of the cases under consideration. However, the size of real GDP per capita seemed to be a predictor of the level of democracy (measured by three different indicators), as the higher the real GDP per capita a country had, the better the quality of democracy it had.
