ΑκτοπλοΐαAbstract
In recent years, marks of skepticism have been left behind in coastal cabotage circles. The real economy is still growing anemically at European and global level, with a negative impact on passenger and freight demand. The profitability of the sector is at the lowest levels of the last years, while the prospects for recovery become particularly difficult given the course of the Greek economy. One of the main reasons for the reduced profitability is the entry of low-cost airlines in the Greek market, as they often offer a fare lower than that of the ferry ticket. In this context, the unexpected coronavirus pandemic has brought about catalytic change and unprecedented recession in both the aviation and coastal cabotage industries that must be addressed immediately and effectively to ensure their viability.
Therefore, in the present study, the topic of tourism in relation to aviation and coastal shipping will be studied. There will be a historical review of the evolution of the two industries and their current special characteristics will be presented. The catalytic effect of the COVID-19 pandemic in the two sectors will be analyzed, the problematic points that have emerged will be highlighted and attempts will be made to find solutions that will relieve financially the companies involved. Significant comparative conclusions will be drawn and suggestions for future implementation will be presented.
