The healthcare sector is one of the most important in the economic life of any country, but at the same time one of the most complex. Each country aims to achieve the maximum possible efficiency in healthcare, combined with the lowest possible cost, through its health system. Hospital, medical and pharmaceutical expenses add up to form the Health System’s cost.
The cost of brand name drugs, on- and off- patent, as well as generics added up to form the pharmaceutical costs. The effort of both the state and patients, to limit the health budget, has led to the promotion of generic drugs, mainly due to their low price. In Greece, following the economic measures taken in the context of the more than 10-year economic crisis, specific goals have been set for the use of generic drugs.
However, despite their cost saving possibility, the market penetration of generic drugs remains very low. This raises questions for health professionals’, patients’, and potential consumers’ awareness, perception and preference, regarding generic drugs.
The present study aims to present an updated picture of the pharmaceutical market, in relation to generic drugs, both in terms of their production and distribution on the world market, and in terms of their consumption in the domestic market. Following this analysis, a targeted research was conducted in order to examine the perception, but also the intention to purchase, for this category of drugs from various interest groups (health professionals categorized into doctors, health professionals and pharmacists, patients and consumers generally). Finally, an attempt is made to determine the causes of the detected degree of penetration in the domestic market, but also to propose solutions that could be implemented in order to expand the use of generics.
