Saving behavior: international evidence and theory
View/ Open
Abstract
The financial crisis of 2008, combined with the increasingly complex financial markets and the alarmingly low saving rates, has led to an intensified interest in exploring people’s saving behavior as well as in tackling the problem of undersaving.
The purpose of this master thesis is, on one hand, to review the history of the research relevant to the topics of saving and saving behavior, and on the other, to highlight the latest trends and findings in the literature, with an aim to come up with implications for the development of policies and saving products, in addition to directions for future research.
The present study concludes that the governments should make substantial investments in people’s financial literacy, regardless of their age, and design policies which take into account the actual behavior of consumers. Future research could be directed toward examining the possible positive effects of financial technologies on the saving behavior and, consequently, the well-being of consumers.
