The car trade cycle affects the overall economy of a country because it is an indicator of
economic growth and improvement of its economic climate. The impact of the economic crisis in
Greece in recent years on the car trade cycle is significant. During the period 2010-2013 when
the financial crisis peaked, entrepreneurship in Greece suffered a severe blow. The same thing
happened with the car importing and trading industry, which overall contracted. Sales of new
cars fell sharply in mid-2010, where they fell by half. Since then, sales have been declining until
early 2013, where they have stabilized with a slight upward trend. Based on the findings of the
economic analysis, it appears that companies, after several fluctuations in their turnover, have
shown growth and stability data, indicating that they are beginning to overcome the financial
crisis.
The purpose of this thesis is to study the financial analysis of car importing and trading
companies in Greece based on their published financial statements and more specifically on the
amounts identified in their balance sheets and compiled in accordance with International
Accounting Standards. The method by which financial statements are analyzed is horizontal
analysis.
For this purpose, 7 large import companies with relatively similar sizes and number of
employees have been selected. Following a brief description of the companies, the broader
macroeconomic environment is presented, followed by a critical examination of the financial
statements of the selected companies by analyzing the liquidity, profitability, activity and capital
structure ratios that emerge from the financial statements of the companies. Following is the
analysis and presentation of the accounting statements of these companies. Following is the
conclusion drawn and suggestions for future research concerning the immediate future of this
sector in Greece.
