This Diploma Thesis, which is conducted in Greece, is concerned with the analysis of the relationship between Information Technology and Green Supply Chain Management.
The prevailing methodology for measuring the environmental footprint., in the international literature, is that of “the carbon footprint”. However, this methodology presents a gap, as companies are mainly able to use data from their internal environment and less able to use data from other companies/partners. Therefore, companies should implement green supply chain management systems capable of monitoring detailed information, both of the internal and external environment at every stage of the supply chain. To achieve this goal, an integrated information system is needed between trading partners, to monitor and manage the environmental impact of the supply chain.
The aim of this thesis is to clarify the above concepts and based on extensive literature to analyze the relationship of Information Technology with the sustainability of supply chains and especially with the development of green supply chains.
The research carried out is qualitative and was based on the case study of "Logika", a modern 3PL company. The empirical data, collected through open-ended interviews, was analyzed based on the Resource Based View (RBV) theory. The results showed that the right use and exploitation of IT, but also the business alignment with trading partners can help the company to increase its business performance. Thus, the company can significantly increase its financial performance and environmental sensitivity, creating an "environmentally friendly" image, and gaining the opportunity to increase its market share.
