In today’s global competitive environment, educational institutions are now looking at ways to give students the necessary tools and skills for “lifelong” learning. Human learners approach online learning with a varying array of abilities, due to differences knowledge, goal, experience, interest, background. However, traditional e-learning systems tend to neglect the diversity of learners. Adaptation is often proposed as a way of overcoming these limitations. AEHS (Adaptive Education Hypermedia System) is an approach to using technology for learning, focusing on self-directed and self-regulated uses of tools and resources by the learner.
Adaptive systems are based on the “description of learner’s properties” called learner model. The process which gathers information to build up the learner model and update it was named: learner modeling. Taking into account the difficulties in developing complex technologies for collecting user characteristics and managing such a large amount of information, our purpose is the development of simple tools in the form of a plugin that enhance interactivity among users. In this way, we can achieve the individualization of online education systems. Furthermore, the main goal of this paper is the combination of collaborative and cooperative learning strategies with new technologies. Internet and new technologies have facilitated the implementation of these strategies by specialized e-learning platforms, leading to the emergence of new forms of education and training, particularly on-line and distance learning that facilitate and encourage different forms of collaboration and cooperation between learners.
For this purpose, we developed an annotation tool for the Learning and Talent Development platform eFront tailored to meet the needs of setting learning paths that can be customized for each individual learner as well as to meet the needs of collaboration and cooperation among the users of the system.
