Business opportunities and forms of funding for social entrepreneurship

Social entrepreneurship is referred to as the third sector of the economy. It signifies the area between private and public domain, which mainly stands out for social purposes such us the integration at work for people with disabilities and the prosperity of the members of the communities and the society in general. Social entrepreneurship is developing in this context. A very specific characteristic of social entrepreneurship is the creation and functioning of businesses with entrepreneurial and commercial value, introducing innovative techniques and creating social value. The aim of this research was to highlight the forms of funding that social enterprises can benefit from in the volatile economic conditions of the Greek environment. The amount of use of these forms of funding from the social enterprises was examined at the same time, to investigate if they are beneficial to the development of the social economy sector. A successful social enterprise in Athens is studied about the way it is funded and functioning, in order to achieve the goals of this research. In addition to that, a research was held during three months, concerning the methods of funding the selected social enterprises have used to commence their business activities in the economic recession. The research discovered that in according to the enterprises of the sample the social enterprises don’t have much ability for investments and the number of jobs created for marginalized people is not significant. Most of the enterprises use their own means of funding and private organizations (but not from the banks) for the beginning of the entrepreneurial process, and their revenues come mostly from their transactions with the open market. It is pointed out that although in theory there are a lot of different forms of funding, public and European, they are not being put into practice as announced by the authorities.
