Τhe majority of cargo is transported using the sea in either liquid or bulk form. In recent years, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is constantly gaining ground in the global market and constitutes an expert market which is developing rapidly in the maritime energy transport sector.
This study takes into account the use of global LNG technology and describes the processes involved in its supply chain. An important part of the LNG’s transfer process are the type of ships under construction, future storage stations, liquefaction and the necessity of new terminals.
For the purpose of this study, a description is made of the loading/unloading procedures of LNG on LNG type ships. Further more, an analysis is given of the economic performance of LNG as fuel in the shipping industry taking also into account the environmental benefits arising from its use.
Finally, the environmental footprint of LNG is analyzed and proposals and measures are suggested to minimize emissions and wastewater.
