Abstract
This work was written in order to create a platform in Dotnetnuke, which is an open source software that is used to help the administrators manage their websites even if they have no special technical knowledge. I use this platform and I develop a system which allows users to create, customize and manage their own marketplace. In order for this work and platform to be better understood by the readers this dissertation was written into three thematic sections.
The first chapter is a reference on electronic commerce. It describes the basic concepts of electronic commerce and its evolution from the creation of the internet until today. Moreover, I analyze the advantages and disadvantages of electronic commerce for consumers and entrepreneurs. Furthermore, I list and I describe the various types of e-commerce and their basic principles. At the end of the chapter, I describe the legal framework prevailing in Greece. I also mention the difference of online shops from the common stores as well as the rights of the consumers which protect them from people who may try to cheat them.
The second chapter analyzes the secondary markets. It describes their evolution from the physical secondary markets to the electronic secondary markets and gives some examples of secondary markets and their importance for the international market. Furthermore, the factors that can increase or decrease the demand for used products in the international market are presented. Moreover, the economic value of secondary markets is noted and examples are provided to make clear their necessity for the economy. At the end of the chapter the status of the electronic secondary markets that exist in Greece is analyzed and a listing of the major websites that offer second hand products is provided.
The third chapter describes briefly the concept of content management systems (CMS) like dotnetnuke, which is the system used to create the application in this dissertation. It also describes the advantages of this system for the developers of the websites as well as for the users when the platform is in its final form and is released online. At the end of the chapter, I describe how I created the platform and I present details about how a user can create, customize and use his own markeplace on the internet.
