The purpose of this study is to look into the technique of data envelopment analysis in the health sector. The data envelopment analysis is a non-parametric method that aims to the efficiency measurement of different units based on the ratio of their inputs and outputs. The goal of this method is to define the ideal efficiency as a condition in which the inputs of a unit are going to have the maximum use in order to produce outputs.
In a period of economic austerity where policies are cutting down the expenses for health, it is alleged that a method capturing the factors of the sub-efficiency of the health units would receive a great deal of attention, given that the same results are produced with minimun cost. In this thesis we quote the most common inputs and outputs of health units, since the universal use of the same inputs and outputs that examine the efficiency of similar health units is of a great importance. The analysis of the methods and inputs-outputs are based on selected studies, as well as relevant hospital efficiency studies in different regions of the world and the efficiency of outpatient health sector.
Based on these facts it seems that most health units worldwide have the potential of improving their efficiency through a better use of their inputs.
