During the last few years, corporations and international scientific community alike turn their attention and interest in the object of Project Management. More specifically, concerning the area of Information Technology, the projects developed today by corporations are a major challenge, as the management of such projects is not an easy task. Many Information Technology projects which are undertaken are not completed successfully for various reasons, which most of the time are ignored. One of the main reasons for failure of Information Technology projects is the absence of project management methodology.
In this Master thesis, we initially address the principles of IT Project Management, we
examine the cause of failure and success of IT projects and we refer to the necessity of project management methodology. Then we present in detail the organizational structure of management methodology PRINCE2 and PMBOK. Then we describe the hypothetical IT project "Electronic Urban Planning II», pointing out the features and characteristics of the project and give a hypothetical problematic management setting. After that we apply the PRINCE2 project management methodology by examining in detail, step by step, the process followed with the principles, themes and processes of PRINCE2 methodology, which ultimately leads to project success. In the same IT project we apply analytically the PMBOK project management methodology. Finally, we present our conclusions as they result from the implementation of the two methodologies and describe our proposals for complementary implementation in the future.
