The present thesis studies the role of fiscal policy and in particular the government spending on economic growth in five European countries. We follow the neoclassical approach and along with Government consumption we examine the role of real investment, employment. The thesis presents theoretical aspects of the issue under examination and briefly summarizes finings of past related studies. Then, it sets out the model under estimation and related graphical analysis. Overall our results show that the effect of the variables that have the greatest interest in the growth of a country is the Employment, the size of the Government and the Investment rates. More specifically, the most significant variable is proved to be the Investment. On the contrast, the variables Depth and Unemployment seem to have a supplementary role in the economic growth of a country. The statistical significance of the variable being used, stresses out the importance of an expansionary fiscal policy in contrast with the restrictive policy emphasis on debt and reduction of government spending.
