This work examines the cost effectiveness of a forward looking sonar, mounted on the ship’s bulbous bow, as an oil risk control option due to groundings of oil carriers, by utilizing the FSA methodology. On the basis of the technical and operational (inc. human) characteristics of the system, its grounding averting ability is analyzed and determined for specific ship categories (sizes) and in conjunction with the historical data of accidents the risk reduction offered by its application is estimated. Taking into account the system’s overall cost and the risk reduction, its economic assessment is performed against the CATS criterion.
