Abstract
Nowadays, the results of human's impetuous acts regarding its behavior towards the environment, have presented a series of environmental impacts, sounding a note of warning. Consequently, today's world, characterized by rapid changes in national and international level, is called to face up one of the biggest challenges of these days, the protection and recuperation of the environment. More precisely, the protection of the marine environment constitutes an activity with intense social character and one of the basic conditions for the economic growth of a region. In any case, the sustainable development is considered as an imperative need. In particular, the sustainable or viable development sets a triple goal: an effective economic growth, socially fair and environmentally viable, aiming at further improvement of the living conditions of individuals, as well as preserving at the same time their environment in short, medium and, mainly, in long term. The diplomatic thesis presents the sustainable development in the shipping industry, which constitutes a vital and even more effective world branch, which supports the world's economy. Moreover, the forms of pollution by shipping are described. It is concluded that the discharges of pollutants and materials in the marine environment are related basically to the character of "voluntarity". At the same time, legislative measures relative with the subject are presented in international and national context. European Union and its member states act in favor of the sustainable development not only in the inside, but also outside their borders, especially in the framework of international organizations and during international events. Finally, proposals for sustainable development in the shipping industry are also mentioned. Control and reduction of pollution by shipping can be achieved combining the flexibility and simplicity in the way that these are applied, developing at the same time innovative technologies environmentally friendly and avoiding the distortions of the market.
