This thesis deals with the use of wind energy in the shipping industry. More specifically, it examines the use of wind energy and its applications in the construction, the structural design and the operation of ships. Furthermore it aims in establishing ways to reduce gas emissions and other pollutants and their contribution to environmental pollution. It also aims to identify ways in which the performance of ships can be improved and fuel consumption reduced in order to achieve lower overall costs. In addition, special mention is made to Greece by taking into consideration the wind potential of the Greek seas and its use as a preliminary model.
