The present dissertation tries to analyze the functions of the company INTERBANKING SYSTEMS S. A. (DIAS S.A.), which is the national payment system of Greece. In the first section, we describe the global environment and conditions in the transactions sector during the 1980’s, and the incumbent need for the existence of a national payment system which could support, encourage and strengthen the domestic banks against the foreign competitive banking system. In the next two sections, we examine Electronic Banking, namely the general framework where payment systems work, and we present the factors which led to the foundation of DIAS and the special features of that period (i.e. at the end of 1980s). In the fourth section, we deal with the details regarding the foundation of the company, such as its special purpose or the legislative frame which concerns its function. We also discuss the role of the Board of Directors, the General Meeting, the auditors of the firm, and we give information about the fixed equipment and the impending update of DIAS computer center. The next very important section analyzes the seven services of the company and the products supplied through these services, as well as the banks which participate in the services. In the sixth section, we present through diagrams and figures the movements and the values of each payment service, but also we describe the general performance. The next two sections refer to the technical infrastructure of DIAS and the impending improvements in the firm’s internet site. In the ninth section, the banks-members of the company are presented. The tenth section investigates the so-called Single Euro Payment Area (SEPA), how it works, its purpose and its relationship with DIAS S.A. The eleventh section discusses the payment systems HERMES – TARGET– TARGET2-GR. In the last section, we examine the functions of the company TIRESIAS S.A. and how they connect to those of DIAS. The dissertation closes with some basic conclusions.
