Abstract
The rapid technological developments along with advancements in telecommunications have developed a new portable communication appliance that combines the capabilities of both mobile phones and computers. These high-end mobile telephones (smartphones) appear to have started a revolution in various sectors of the world economy, one of which can also be the electronic tourism sector. The adoption of an innovative promotional mix along with the support of tourist products and services offered in each country, not only by the national and local authorities but also by private tourist sector providers, can ensure better quality and differentiated provision of services that can ensure an increase of the country's tourist market share within the international tourist demand. The effects of such applications of high-end mobile telephones and other developing interactive multimedia systems are extensive and can enhance the structure of the tourist industry. Within such a framework a country such as Greece, whose tourist industry plays an important role in the country's economy, owes to adapt itself to the new trends that are impelled upon the tourist industry. The supply of tourist products and services in Greece, is not yet fully geared towards the needs of the new generation consumers that are familiarized and users of these new technologies, therefore, it is mandatory that the efforts be intensified in order for the Greek tourist enterprises to move themselves towards this direction so that they manage to acquire a strategic competitive advantage over other countries offering similar tourist services and products. The reader of this dissertation will familiarize himself/herself with the basic benefits mobile platforms can offer as well as their new operating systems. He / She will also become fully aware of the types of applications available by the high-end mobile appliances as well as their programming differences compared to laptops, tablets, etc. There will also follow a description of the Greek mobile market in reference to the applications of high-end mobile appliances geared towards the potential adaptation and application of them in electronic tourism. According to the preceding research proposal will be suggested as to the development of an application for an electronic tourist guide for the Municipality Lasithi Plateau region. The application will be compatible with high-end mobile telephones making use of Android operating system that will be also supplementing the printed publication of a Municipality tourist guide, exploiting all modern technologies available for multimedia applications and modern mobile appliances. Finally conclusions will be drawn on the development of similar applications in smart terminals and how the can be operated so that they assist the promotion of similar tourist destinations.
