The subject of this dissertation addresses issues that come from both the business and the technology worlds. It has as its main subject the service oriented architecture (SOA) and how SOA can be used to serve business goals. The service oriented architecture is helping enterprises respond and adapt more quickly to the changing business environment by promoting the reusability and interconnection of information systems. A competive advantage can be achieved by insuring that business processes can be adapted to new market requirements nimbly and that all this adaptation can be supported by “built-to-change” information systems a solution that is achieved now by the Service Oriented Architecture. Designing an enterprise SOA is a challenging task. One needs to understand business needs, be patient, well-informed and understand the specific characteristics of the target SOA state of the enterprise. Despite the fact that currently there exist several tools in the market that can help one create and maintain a SOA infrastructure, they cannot substitute the amount of thinking and preparation required for the successful design, implementation and deployment of the SOA architecture in an enterprise. Most SOA projects fail because enterprises are eager and over-enthusiastic to start the design of their SOA but then they are lost in the details of the implementation.
