The present Master’s thesis proposes the design and development of an interactive e-course for teaching German as a second foreign language to lower secondary school students at CEFR level A2, integrating the Task-Based Language Teaching
model with digital storytelling, gamification and Artificial Intelligence tools. The literature review revealed a limited number of studies investigating the combined design of these elements within a single e-course, particularly in the context of German as a second foreign language for secondary school learners, a gap that the present study aims to address.
The proposed educational scenario, titled “Geheimakte Frankenstein”, embeds ten sequential missions within a unified narrative framework based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, organized into three thematic chapters. Each mission follows an adapted, seven-phase version of the TBLT model (Pre-Task, Task, Planning, Report, Language Focus, Reflection, Badge & Feedback), explicitly aligned with coded learning objectives and the study’s research questions. The digital environment was developed on Wix platform, enriched with embedded Web 2.0 tools (Lumi, Wordwall, Quizlet, Padlet, Mentimeter, Canva) and Artificial Intelligence tools (HeyGen, Chat-GPT), which were selectively integrated into specific missions to provide personalized feedback and authentic communicative experiences.
The thesis formulates two central research questions concerning the effectiveness of the proposed scenario in enhancing student engagement, motivation, collaboration and communicative competence, as well as the contribution of AI and proposes a complete set of research instruments for their future empirical investigation.
