This postgraduate thesis concerns the design and development of an electronic course for 3rd year high school students (GEL/EPAL) in the subject of Economics, with the aim of supporting learning motivation and promoting a substantive understanding of economic concepts. The impetus for this study was the stress of exams, which often leads to sterile memorization, limiting learning motivation for connecting knowledge with its practical application.
The pedagogical design of the electronic course is based on the pedagogical model of Cognitive Apprenticeship and the four dimensions of ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction). At the same time, Scenario-Based Learning is utilized as a basic strategy, with Robinson Crusoe as the main character from Daniel Defoe's novel of the same name. The character and story were adapted to meet the educational requirements of the e-course, enabling students to tackle financial problems and apply economic concepts within an experiential framework. The course of the activities is based on the successive phases of Modeling, Coaching, Scaffolding, Articulation, Reflection, Exploration, which are framed by collaborative strategies, such as Think-Pair-Share, Jigsaw, Role Playing and Team-Pair-Solo. Additionally, the e-course was developed on the Wix platform, through which asynchronous activities are implemented, while MS Teams is used for synchronous lectures. In addition, the activities are supported by a variety of digital tools and an Artificial Intelligence application.
The present study constitutes an educational design proposal, without including field implementation or empirical data collection. However, exploring learning motivation through the participation of a real sample in the e-course is suggested. For this purpose, the utilization of pre-test and post-test questionnaires, as well as the conduct of interviews, is envisioned. The contribution of this study lies in creating a theoretically grounded and applicable e-course that aims to teach Economics through an experiential and meaningful approach.
