This master’s thesis examines the relationship between digital fashion, virtual reality, and the potential to reduce unnecessary production and material waste in the fashion industry. The study is based on the premise that material waste is not only associated with the final disposal of garments or post-consumer waste management, but is already shaped in the stages preceding mass production, through processes of design, physical sample development, technical revisions, product evaluation, and decision-making.
The aim of the thesis is to investigate how virtual reality, as part of the broader digital transformation of fashion, can contribute to reducing unnecessary production and material waste in the pre-production stages. The methodological approach is based on a literature review and examines the connection between digital fashion and virtual reality in relation to the processes of product design, development, and evaluation before production.
The analysis shows that virtual reality can contribute to waste reduction when it enhances product evaluation before production, by reducing uncertainty, the need for multiple physical samples, and repetitive revisions. However, its contribution is not automatic, but depends on the quality of digital simulation and its meaningful integration into product development processes. Overall, VR does not fully replace the physical evaluation of garments; however, it can function as a complementary tool for preventing waste before mass production.
