This master’s thesis designs, develops, and pilot-tests "The Upskill Journey", an innovative digital program (e-course) for adults, aiming at personalized professional skills development (Upskilling/Reskilling) through the utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Theoretically, the study is grounded in the TPACK model and Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction, providing the pedagogical background for technology integration. Subsequently, the necessity of AI Literacy in the modern labor market, the role of Agentic Engagement, and the contribution of Gamification and Project-Based Learning (PjBL) to enhancing motivation are analyzed. Reference is also made to the lack of research coherently combining the above models in asynchronous education contexts, as well as the necessity of designing interventions aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 4/8/9) and the European DigComp 2.2 framework.
Methodologically, a Design-Based Research (DBR) approach is adopted. The educational scenario is developed on the Webnode digital platform and utilizes collaboration tools (Padlet), design tools, and Generative AI (ChatGPT, Canva AI, Gamma AI, Kahoot AI) to support personalized learning and creative problem-solving (Design Thinking). The research sample consists of 40 adult learners. Data collection includes quantitative measurements (pre–post questionnaires/rubrics) and qualitative assessment, focusing on the development of digital/soft skills and active engagement.
The results (Paired Samples t-test) demonstrate a statistically significant improvement in digital and soft skills, while confirming the positive impact of Artificial Intelligence and Gamification on intrinsic motivation. Research limitations concern the sample size, the short-term assessment, and the potential impact of the "Novelty Effect". Longitudinal studies, the use of a control group, and expansion to different demographic groups are proposed. Overall, "The Upskill Journey" emerges as an effective, flexible, and pedagogically substantiated e-learning model for the era of Artificial Intelligence.
