This thesis presents the process of creating a 3d digital animation film based on the Thracian folklore tale of “The Boy with the Pie”. Although the main audience of an animation movie is children, such films are beloved among people of all ages, making them the perfect tool to introduce a variety of subjects in a pleasant and understandable way. Furthermore, folk tales are a means of storytelling which began as a way to entertain and teach valuable lessons to youngsters. By encouraging learning in an enjoyable way, a factor both media have in common, these two genres can be combined to gain beneficial properties; folk tales continue to spread and gain the ability to appeal to a larger audience, while animation films are enriched with themes that can be presented as is, or adapted to fit the current era. The digital world consists of a demanding audience, one that chases a constant stream of impressive information to feed their social media accounts. The upward speed and globalization that come with the advancement of a digital community can negatively impact the culture of the people who lack a voice in the tech world, creating negative feelings for their own social identity, such as indifference or even shame. This creates the need to incorporate an ever-increasing number of borrowed customs which leads to, either intentionally or unintentionally, the eventual rejection of their cultural identity offered to them by their birthplace and ancestors. In the chapters that follow, two themes will be analyzed: folk tales and animation, with a greater focus on the second, presenting the stages of developing a short animated movie based on the aforementioned tale of “The Boy with the Pie”. The main objective of this thesis is to present the requirements of such a project, as well as to analyze the positive influences towards the propagation of tradition by using the prospects offered by digital culture, utilizing 3d animation as the main tool of dissemination. In order to aid in understanding the terminology used, an introduction to the history and techniques of 3d animation is provided. Additionally, an analysis on the second major theme takes place, that of the folk tale, aiming to cover the traditions of Thrace found within the story of “The Boy with the Pie”.
