This postgraduate dissertation explores how 3D digitization and 3D printing technologies can be combined with a mobile city-game in order to enhance the cultural experience of cruise visitors in Piraeus. The research involved the 3D scanning of six archaeological exhibits from the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus using Artec Leo and Artec Spider scanners. The dataset was processed in Artec Studio and Meshmixer, resulting in geometrically reliable digital models suitable for documentation and 3D printing.
In parallel, a prototype-level mobile city-game application was designed to encourage cruise passengers to explore Piraeus during their short stay. The application links selected points of interest in the city with digital content, integrates playful interaction elements, and concludes the experience with the option to create and obtain a personalized 3D-printed souvenir.
The findings indicate that the combination of digital documentation, interactive mobile applications, and 3D-printed souvenirs can support a coherent cultural experience model, strengthening visitors’ engagement with Piraeus and highlighting the role of digital technologies in cruise tourism.
