This thesis investigates the strategic utilization of Information Systems (IS) for creating and sustaining a competitive advantage in businesses, with a specific focus on the healthcare sector. The primary objective of the study is to investigate data flow within perinatal care and to highlight the necessary conditions for bridging the information gap between the prenatal and postnatal periods.
The methodology is based on a qualitative case study of the specialized Astraia software (by Nexus), drawing data exclusively from secondary sources and technical documentation. For the analysis, established theoretical frameworks were employed, such as Porter’s generic strategies, the Resource-Based View (RBV/VRIO), and the Strategic Alignment Model.
The findings demonstrate that Astraia Software constitutes a knowledge-intensive strategic resource that offers a sustainable competitive advantage through a differentiation focus. However, a significant functional discontinuity was identified in the transfer of clinical information following delivery, which limits organizational learning. As an innovative solution, the study proposes the adoption of interoperability standards (such as FHIR) to create a unified, "ecosystemic" digital mother-child record. This approach transforms Astraia from a mere recording tool into a strategic learning hub, enhancing strategic alignment, increasing switching costs, and securing the organization’s market leadership.
