This thesis examines the international ship demolition market during the period
2014-2024, analyzing trends, patterns, and factors shaping the industry. The
ship recycling industry constitutes a critical link in the vessel lifecycle, with
significant economic, environmental, and social implications. The research is
based on data from NGO Shipbreaking Platform, analyzed using descriptive
statistical methods and data visualization techniques. The results highlight
significant changes in the geographical distribution of demolition activity, with
South Asia dominating the market while China shows a declining trend due to
stricter environmental regulations. Analysis by vessel type reveals
differentiated demolition patterns, with bulk carriers and tankers representing
the main categories. Average demolition age shows variations depending on
market conditions and regulatory constraints. The thesis concludes that the ship
demolition market is characterized by high cyclicality linked to shipping cycles,
while regulatory pressures, particularly from the European Union, are gradually
reshaping the industry. The findings have implications for policy formulation
and understanding industry dynamics.
