This Master’s thesis examines the role and significance of logistics within the context of e-commerce, with particular emphasis on companies operating in the household goods retail sector. The main objective of the study is to analyze the core functions of the supply chain, explore the technological tools that support logistics in the e-commerce environment, and highlight strategies aimed at improving efficiency, delivery speed, and business sustainability.
Initially, the fundamental concepts of e-commerce and e-business are presented, along with their types, stages of adoption by enterprises, and their advantages, disadvantages and challenges in the contemporary market. At the same time, key concepts of logistics and supply chain management are analyzed, as well as their direct relationship with customer service.
Subsequently, the thesis focuses on the daily operational activities of the supply chain in e-commerce, the structure of production and distribution networks, inventory management and inventory types and the importance of supplier selection and collaboration. Particular emphasis is placed on the Just-in-Time (JIT) method, highlighting its advantages and its contribution to cost reduction and inventory optimization.
Furthermore, the characteristics and requirements of household goods retail companies are examined, with emphasis on sourcing strategies, demand management and forecasting, logistics planning, and organizational structures of the supply chain. The study also presents modern technologies and information systems that support logistics operations, such as ERP, CRM, and WMS systems, the role of Software as a Service (SaaS), the use of RF terminals in warehousing and 3PL operations, and product identification systems.
In the following section, strategies for improving logistics in e-commerce are analyzed, including go-to-market and distribution strategies, fast delivery methods, reverse logistics management and the implementation of sustainable and environmentally friendly logistics practices, taking into account the environmental impacts of transportation.
Finally, the thesis concludes with a case study of a household goods retail company, presenting the operation of its electronic store, order distribution processes and the main conclusions derived from the practical application of logistics. The findings confirm that effective supply chain management constitutes a critical factor for achieving competitive advantage in the modern e-commerce environment.
